What is PassEv?
Today you need a password for almost any service in the web. Despite the efforts of companies and open communities (Passport, LiveId, OpenId, etc) to create a global identification system, there are thousands of websites that don't use this type of global accounts, but propietary ones based on forms (user-passwords pairs). So if you usually browse the net you have to have accounts in many different sites, and remembering all the users and passwords is a real pain. You may always use the same password for all the sites, but this is, at least, risky...... the site's admin usually knows the passwords of everyone signed in their services.
PassEv stands for Passwords Everywhere. It's a free small utility that will allow you to save securely and synchronize all your websites' passwords between any computer using Internet Explorer. Using it you will only have to remember one password, the PassEv one or master password.
But.... Internet Explorer already stores passwords.
Yes, it does. But there are two major points here:
-
Internet Explorer uses a weak security to store site's passwords. You only have to Google a little and you'll find many utilities to recover Internet Explorer saved passwords from a PC. PassEv uses the best algorithms to reach the maximum security. Even if a hacker gets your encrypted passwords file, it would take so much time to decrypt it that he would die before getting your information.
-
Internet Explorer saves passwords locally. That means that if you go to another PC and try to load the same page with Internet Explorer, that local version doesn't have a copy of the stored passwords, so you must type them in manually. Have you forgotten your password? Bad luck, you will have to recover it.
So, what does PassEv do?
Easy.... after installed, it saves passwords locally to an encrypted file as Internet Explorer does. But:
-
It uses the strongest security to encrypt the passwords store.
-
It sends the encrypted file securely to a web server where it's stored. If you use a second PC with PassEv installed, it will recover the file and you'll have all the passwords available. So it synchronizes the passwords between as many computers as you want.
And how much does it cost?
PassEv is a utility I designed for personal purpouses. Then I thought it could be useful for more people as well as me. So it's free for everyone.
